Philip Gerald Newey
February 20, 1949 ~ April 26, 2024
Very sad to report the recent passing of Gerry Newey’s oldest son Phil, after a long illness.
A larger than life personality, Phil had managed to keep his health issues from the rest of us, so it was quite a shock to hear that he had left us.
Condolences to his family, especially son Sean and daughter Melissa, and to his brother Bruce and family. He will leave a big gap in the wider Newey whanau.
It was Phil who was the keeper of his father’s WW2 history; an old suitcase in his L.A. garage, with Gerry’s flying log book, diary, photographs and keepsakes that formed the basis of this website. We owe Phil for his efforts in scanning and photographing and sharing this treasure trove.
It was a highlight for me back in 2013 when Phil and his son Sean met up with Gerry’s old crewmate, Flight Engineer Doug Williamson for the first time. So special to re-establish this 75-year old connection.
Go well mate, you will be sorely missed.
Hi Robert and Kaye Emmett from Horsham in Australia. Have just found out about Phil Neweys passing. Bought cars from Phil, visited and stayed with him in 976 Laurelwood lane Anaheim. We are very saddened by his loss as Phil was one of our family to us. He came to our daughters wedding 5 years ago. He loved the wedding and the people there. The world has lost another good person , very sad.. we recall Phil rang us not long before he passed and he always commented “I love you guys ” We loved you too Phil and you will always have a special spot in our hearts R.I.P. Phil Newey.
